We opened our doors in October of 1996 to serve victims of sexual assault in the city of Albuquerque. The SANE Collaborative was founded with the leadership and participation of community members, aided by state and city agencies such as: the New Mexico Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs, the Albuquerque Police Department, the Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico, the District Attorney’s Office, advocacy groups, and local hospitals. It was the desire of these organizations to provide a major service: holistic nursing care.
In February of 2010, we began offering medical/forensic exams to victims of domestic violence.
Visits to the emergency department are not necessary prior to visiting SANE; however, the nurse examiner might determine that injuries are serious enough to visit the emergency department. The nurse examiner will then make an appropriate referral.
Today our services have expanded even more in our pursuit to serve the people of Albuquerque. In addition to sexual assault and domestic violence exams, we also offer suspect/offender examinations, acute pediatric care, and treatment for victims of intrafamilial violence. Our SANEs screen for traumatic brain injury, strangulation, and human trafficking.
